Reducing data entry errors is a combination of technique, environment, and habit. Most errors come from one of three sources: rushing, incorrect hand position, or fatigue. Here is how to address each one.
👉 Measure your current accuracy: Take the free 10-key typing test — you get your accuracy percentage instantly alongside your KPH.
Slow down to your accurate speed. If you are making more than 2–3 errors per minute, you are typing faster than your muscle memory supports. Drop your speed until errors disappear, then gradually increase.
Never rush the enter key. Many errors happen not on the number itself but on the confirmation — pressing Enter before the last digit registers.
Keep your eyes on the source document. Looking between document and screen creates transcription errors. Train yourself to read a full number, remember it, then enter it without re-reading.
Most employers require 95% or higher. Financial and medical data entry roles often require 98%+. See our speed and accuracy benchmark guide for full industry requirements.
